I have used the ishares ETFs as a proxy for the key factors driving the US markets
I missed this one a few weeks back. I'm looking to buy COH and short ADH for a 1.56. Currently market is trading higher than this. Target around 1.72
New pairs trade from @Lester_Davids. We are buying JSE:GFI and shorting JSE:HAR ratio 1.6066. GFI is ex Div in two days (R0.60) so keep this in mind.
Michael Porter on the Unum Capital Trading Desk likes the +AGL / -BHP pair. I might be a few days late on this one, an the ex Div date a few days back does affect the pair. entry 1.006 with a target of 1.095 (TP) and SL of 0.963
Retailer pairs idea from @Lesater_Davids +SHP / -WHL at 2.0330 with a target of 2.235 and SL of 1.932
New +TKG / - MTN pair at 0.7554 with a target of 0.825 (TP1) and 0.92 (TP2)
I think the JSE:OMU rerating relative to JSE:SLM is overdone and I am looking to enter the pair around 0.2462 with a target of 0.27 (TP1) and 0.275 (TP2). My stop-loss is set at 0.234
iShares semi-conductor ETF (SOXX), on Thursday had its largest inflow of the year with more net inflows on Friday. I would prefer entry at $194 - $195, but I am getting long at $198.43 with a TP of $220.
The S&P500 is trapped in a fairly tight range, between 2830 and 2960, we are currently mid range. Short-term traders can trade the range, while more longer term investors can wait for the break …. Look to buy the SPY ETF near the 2930 bottom of the channel, or use the inverse ProShares Short S&P500 ETF (SH) to get short at the top of the channel (2950)
"Energy-stock valuations have come down this year and are below their long-term average. And many industry players are responding to investor pressure to rein in capital spending, curb supply, boost returns, and pay out more to shareholders in dividends and stock repurchases," Andrew Barry. Looking to trade the short-term reversal.

With the release of John Wick: Chapter 3, can Lionsgate play catch-up and narrow the differential with Disney (NYSE:DIS)
I'm putting on a South African banking pair for clients, Long FSR and Short NED. Trade initially spotted by our Trading Desk Analyst, Lester Davids @Lester_Davids
@RobbyP is shorting the STXFIN. I thought I would have a look .... pity we cant trade the Banks Index directly. So you either short the bank basket (I have included the relative performance) or you short the broad financial basket STXFIN. Trade looks OK to me
Comment from Investec this morning: "Decent session for US equities ex the Nasdaq that continues to fall foul of rotation into old world sectors." Definitely looks that way when you compare Nasdaq 100 to the DJ Utilities.
A classic example of Merger Arbitrage this morning with IBM announcing they are paying a premium for Red Hat. RHT jumped almost 45% at one stage (notice the huge gap) with IBM moving in the opposite direction. Financial theory states that "a merger arbitrageur typically buys shares of the target company's stock, in this case RHT, while shorting shares of the...
some recent chatter in the Unum Trading room: "Can you please have a look at +IPL/-BVT? The gap appears wide relative to historical performance. " @Lester_Davids "Yes, I picked this up two weeks ago, and not going that great so far. Also waiting for this gap to close." @michaelporter "Thanks Michael. IPL seems to be forming a double bottom developing, so we may...
