The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission cannot seal documents related to former official William Hinman's 2018 speech to Ripple on cryptocurrencies and securities, a federal judge has ruled, as the regulator pursues lawsuits against companies closely related to the XRP cryptocurrency. District Judge Analisa Torres of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York ruled that documents related to the speech, in which the former SEC corporate treasurer said that, in his opinion, ethereum is not a security, could not be sealed by court order. A magistrate for the court, Sarah Netburn, first ruled in January 2022 that the documents needed to be handed over to Ripple as part of the ongoing discovery process.
