Liquidity risk is the risk that a security can only be sold by incurring large transaction costs. The easiest securities to sell (meaning the most readily marketable) are those with high credit ratings and short term maturities. The least marketable securities (meaning the hardest to sell) are those with low credit ratings and long term maturities.
