Beyond Basic Candlestick Pattern AnalysisLearning to Recognize Who Is Controlling the Stock Price
There is a plethora of training on Candlestick Pattern Analysis and interpretation, and yet this remains one of the most problematic areas for Technical Traders who want to trade at the expert level.
Once the basics of Japanese Candlestick Patterns are understood, it is time to move up to the next tier of analysis. That is being able to recognize not only where a pattern is, but also who forms that pattern, why they are capable of creating that pattern, what automated orders generate that pattern, and which Market Participant Groups react or chase that pattern.
Nowadays it has become critical to include Volume with Candlestick Analysis, because this provides the basis for recognizing which Market Participant Group created that candle pattern.
Candlestick Pattern Analysis at the expert level involves more than just one to three candles. Instead it includes a larger group of candles in the near term. This is what I call "Relational Analysis." This is especially useful for Swing Traders, Momentum Traders, Velocity Traders, Swing Options Traders, and Day Traders using Swing Style Intraday action.
The NYSE:RAMP chart is an excellent example of a Candlestick Pattern for Swing Style Trading.
See where High Frequency Traders (HFTs) took control of price, and gapped the stock down for one day on extreme volume. Selling did not continue the following two days, and Volume was above the Moving Average, but much lower than the High Frequency Traders' spiking Volume pattern.
This was the first accumulation level for this stock. Dark Pools started buying the stock even though High Frequency Traders were selling, since they typically miss this initial buy mode of the giant Institutions.
High Frequency Traders typically create the final gap down to the low which, if it reverses quickly, indicates a Buy Zone area for the Dark Pools. These patterns are what I call "Shifts of Sentiment." They happen in bottom formations where buying is generally dominated by the Largest Institutions' quiet accumulation.
The next phase will be when Professional Traders and then High Frequency Traders discover the Dark Pool accumulation. The bottom is not complete, but it shifts sideways if more Dark Pools decide to buy.

Buybacks vs. Dark Pool RotationThis lesson is about understanding the dynamics behind corporate buybacks. Sell-Side Institutions, aka the Banks of Record, have their floor traders do the actual buying of shares on behalf of the corporation. However, the Dark Pools, meaning the Buy-Side Institutions, start selling as the buybacks are going on.
This training will help you enter a buyback sooner and exit with higher profits for swing trading. We'll study the NASDAQ:AAPL chart to identify buyback candlestick patterns and how to see when the Dark Pools are selling to lower inventory, which is called "rotation." You will also see how the TTAccum/Dist indicator works, and how I use this excellent, leading Hybrid Indicator to aid in my analysis.
Dark Pool Buy Zones Explained with Pro Trader Nudge SignalsThis lesson is about how to identify when a hidden quiet accumulation of a stock is underway and how to prepare for the momentum runs that follow. NYSE:DIS is our example for today.
Dark Pool activity is explained in detail. Alternative Transaction System (ATS) Venues are called Dark Pools of Liquidity.
A Buy Zone is an extended period of hidden accumulation of often millions of shares of stock over several weeks to months.
Professional traders use these buy zones to enter on the penny spread and instigate a trigger of HFT gaps to the advantage of the pro trader. Learn how you can profit from this activity for swing trading or position trading.
Swing Trade Potential Following Completed BottomNASDAQ:GILD has completed its bottom AND sustained the run up from the bottom completion, which provides strong support. The stock is now heading toward the previous resistance highs from January; this is not strong resistance. The type of sideways trend developing now builds energy that can easily move above that weaker resistance. Swing trade watch. Earnings are in a month.
Dark Pool Buy Zone Stages More Gap Up PotentialNYSE:NKE gapped again with a breakaway gap jumping over resistance. These rarely fill and if the gap fills, it will be minimal. Volume was above average. This kind of gap up sequence can happen easily when a classic Shift of Sentiment pattern forms in Accumulation/Distribution indicators as a stock bottoms. But price remains well below the previous gap down. It may gap again as the stock challenges that resistance.
MSFT at Risk for More DownsideNASDAQ:MSFT needs to do a split. It doesn't have buybacks at this time. It is at risk of more downside until it hits prior lows. Support should kick in at the lows of prior rebound areas. The last earnings report was good. Percentage of Shares Held by Institutions ticked up this quarter.
ETF Developers Buying Ahead of Q2 Earnings Reports: HDThis Dow component was the highest gainer for the average with a modest 2.10% gain yesterday. NYSE:HD price action was very controlled. Volume was slightly below average indicating it was likely ETF developers buying ahead of the earnings report.
Accumulation/Distribution indicator confirms this price range is a buy zone.
This is a technical setup to watch for pre-earnings runs for swing trading.
Planning for Next Earnings Season: DFSNYSE:DFS has a platform trend since the highs and lows are very consistent, suggesting controlled buying over time. It had a compression pattern before the pop out of the box white candle and a small gap up candle as the first attempt to break out to the upside. The stock may drop back into the platform range but if it holds, it's a good indication that earnings have improved. This is an example of a good pattern to watch for a pre-earnings run setup with potential to swing trade to earnings. Discover reports July 17th.
BTC Cup and Handle - Target $84kBTC is forming a beautiful looking cup and handle pattern on the Daily chart. In addition we have bullish hidden divergence on the combined all exchange volume accumulation distribution indicator. All of this of course with the background of the post halving bull run widely predicted to be kicking off any time now and this is looking like an excellent opportunity.
Buy on a strong breakout of $71k level.
Stop Loss: Below handle at $66k
Target: $84.2k
USO - Oil Prices are Rising LONGUSO follows the futures prices of oil barrels. On this 30 minute chart, price falls have been
rejected by the POC line of the volume profile and the Lux Algo Donchian channel has
transitioned from downgoing to trending up. The dual TF RSI of Chris Moody now shows
RSI holding above 50 in both the 15 min and 60 min TFs. Net distribution has bottomed out
and accumulation now exceeds distribution. I see this as an excellent entry to buy calls
above the money at $70 or look into shares of USO / UCO/ GUSH ETFs or look at any of
the oil sector stocks including well services which are typically small caps with great upside
volatility with price action momentum. My favorite of those is BORR which currently is trending
up and may have much of its move ahead. The ascending parallel channel of USO is perhaps
a signal for the sector at large.
DIS Testing Fundamental SupportWhen Americans feel depressed or unhappy about life, they tend to spend more money on fun things--something to consider during a presidential election year.
For now, NYSE:DIS is looking fine for its earnings report next week. It was over-speculated, so adjusting back down closer to fundamental support is normal. The gap up in February was on way better than expected earnings, so that level should hold up well.
However, HFTs and MEME groups have been going gaga over earnings and other news. If HFTs or MEMEs drive it down, it will move right back up due to Dark Pool activity first, and then pro trader activity.
Even AMZN may struggle at 2021 HighsNASDAQ:AMZN rebounded off a gap up support level which implies that this is where fundamentals are likely to be. The stock's price shows resilience and no HFT interference for now, even after the Q1 earnings report after market yesterday.
Amazon has more than just its retail consumer and small business products. It has AWS with AI integrated to help the small businesses that sell via AMZN.
AMZN weekly chart shows that the highs of this month ran into the 2021 all-time highs. Note the negative divergence between the price trend and the Accumulation/Distribution indicator line, indicating a lack of buyers at that high. This resistance level is likely to take another quarter or more to overcome unless there is a big surprise. This goes for all companies, not just AMZN.
TANLA looks fantasticTANLA Platforms charts look exceptionally good on both short term and longer term accumulation studies based on volumes.
If you understand the price-action backed by volumes, you wouldn't want to miss this.
Company in a good financial health provides further comfort.

ISRG: Controlled Sideways Patterns Ahead of EarningsThe Medical Instruments and Supplies industry had stellar growth until 2022, when it could not beat that anomaly in revenue growth which was one of the primary reasons for the intermediate-term correction in 2022.
2023 patterned out the abnormal revenues and earnings for most industries that benefited from either the pandemic or from the government OVER-stimulation of the US economy via mega amounts of stimulus checks to WORKING people. Stimulus checks should have been allocated to the unemployed only. That would have lessened the impact of the resulting anomalies. If anyone had bothered to study pandemic history, the impact would have been much less severe for American families and the economy.
As with hundreds of stocks at this time, NASDAQ:ISRG is trending sideways. This is not a perfect platform yet, but the sideways action has some of the traits of a platform such as consistent highs and lows from the perspective of a weekly chart.
The stock is above its previous all-time high now, which provides a technical support level. The weekly chart shows that there has been Dark Pool accumulation and professional traders in the mix.
IF the earnings report next week shows steady growth in both revenues and earnings in the 1st quarter, and IF the CEO's projections are positive, the stock could have an HFT gap up. If there was a negative surprise coming, the CEO should have warned by now. HFTs can make mistakes and gap it down. But if HFTs trade it down, then the stock price will immediately run back up into that sideways price level.
If the report indicates a flat or minor improvement, then it is likely to remain within the sideways trend for another quarter.
A controlled entry above the highs of the current sideways action eliminates that risk factor for either swing trading or position trading.
BA Buy Zone Triggers Short-term ProsNYSE:BA is definitely below its current fundamentals for the 1st quarter of 2024. This was the biggest gain of all the Dow 30 components yesterday.
It was an obvious reversal point at a prior Buy Zone at October's lows. Yesterday was driven by pro traders with a run up at open rather than an HFT gap up at open. We can also see the pro trader nudge pattern in the candlesticks before yesterday's move up.
It may consolidate before running up, but this support level is now established for the next move up.

COIN Completes First Post-IPO BottomAs the first of its kind, this young company has a bright future.
Weekly chart: NASDAQ:COIN has completed its first post-IPO bottom formation and is holding above the completion line despite some selling down in recent weeks.
The company reports Feb 15th. The fundamentals are most likely at or near the bottom completion level. The run up became over-speculated so a minor correction is underway that can dip into the completion level, but support from the bottom formation is strong with Dark Pool buy zone patterns.
How to See Fundamental Improvement in Technicals, $VRNT ExampleStocks that are forming bottoms right now are completing faster due to the improvement of their fundamentals in the current quarter.
For example, NASDAQ:VRNT is moving out of the extreme dump by HFTs and retail groups. This is a common pattern that indicates shifting sentiment in a bottom formation.
The candlesticks stairstep upward as Pro Traders get in the mix of Dark Pools buying at bargain prices.
The largest Institutional investors who use Dark Pools to accumulate huge positions over time are the first to buy in a long-term uptrend, at bargain prices. It can be a very early signal, but these are the savviest fundamentals-driven investors in the market, so it pays to learn their footprints in stock charts.
Shifting Sentiment in DIS Ahead of Earnings?NYSE:DIS stock has struggled this year. However, Accumulation/Distribution on this daily chart shows accumulation over the past several weeks. This is a "shift of sentiment" pattern indicating a better earnings report is likely this time.
The sideways trend is compressing and has consistent lows and highs, a common pattern for accumulation. When Accumulation appears well ahead of an earnings report, it usually (but not always) indicates improvement in fundamentals and establishes a base price for the improvement.
DIS is a target for HFTs since it's a household name stock that gets a lot of attention in the news.
Rotation Patterns in $CVXNYSE:CVX was the Dow 30 component that had the highest loss on Friday.
The chart clearly shows that the earnings report was not going to be good. The pattern is a failed bottom as there has been rotation to lower inventories of the stock for most of this year.
Declining Accum/Distribution indicators at the lows of the range followed by a negative divergence between the price trend and Accum/Dist are indicative of rotation within the sideways trend that never developed into a bottom.
Another Relational Technical Analysis tip to watch out for in other stocks, especially ahead of earnings reports.
